We figured our first post could be about who we are, why we created this website, and our future plans.
Who we are:
First off, we are all graduate students at California State University, Long Beach studying to become school counselors.
Hello everyone! My name is Miriam Green, and for as long as I can remember I have been involved with education in some form. Both my parents are teachers, so I essentially grew up in a classroom and at schools. Because of my parents being teachers, I have always known the power in education. Eventually, this led me to become interested in school counseling. I never had a school counselor that advocated for me, and so in return I want to be what I didn’t have. As a school counselor, I want to be able to support all of my students fully, and advocate for them to the best of my abilities. That is why I believe so strongly in being knowledgeable about laws and ethics in education.
Hello, my name is Tiffany Le and I have had a passion for youth empowerment since my years in high school, volunteering for a leadership development camp for middle- and high-school youth. I started to pursue the area of student development in the higher education setting, with experience in student housing, new student orientation, study abroad, and student success programs; however, I recognized an abundance of resources, initiatives, and programs in higher education but not enough in the K-12 setting. I decided to pursue school counseling in order to provide equitable support services in academic, socioemotional, and college/career counseling in order to empower the youth in our community to reach their potential.
Hi there! My name is Ceinna Bush and I plan on becoming, “ ‘CB’, your child's favorite counselor.” My passion for counseling came from watching my grandmother and mother as educators and wanting more for the communities that they served (South Central and Compton). I am currently a College Advisor and throughout my three years in this role, I have witnessed bright and intelligent students give up on the opportunity of going to college because they simply don't have the resources or support. This is where I want to make a difference. I aspire to be an advocate and change agent for our students. I plan to use my experience, communication skills, and personality to let my students know that if no one else is there for them, that I will be.
Why we created this website:
Our overall goal is to highlight and emphasize the importance of legislation and ethics in the field of school counseling. We want to make it easier for school counselors and other educators to be able to access and read updated legislation connected to school counseling.
Future Plans:
Mainly, we hope that our website eventually becomes an advocating tool for school counselors and educators to use for students. As for now, our plans are to begin by making seven posts in the upcoming week addressing the topics of: California Education Code, New Education Laws, Confidentiality, Parental Rights, Mandated Reporting, Ethics, and Advocacy.
